About Kunya-Urgench
Kunya-Urgench is an ancient city that was a major crossroads of trade routes connecting China and Europe for centuries. It flourished in the 10th-13th centuries as the capital of the powerful Khorezm-Shah Empire. During this golden age, the city bustled with lively markets filled with goods from across the world, grand mosques, and madrasahs that attracted scholars from the entire Muslim world.
However, Kunya-Urgench later faced a tragic fate: in the 13th century, it was devastated by Genghis Khan’s Mongol invasion, then conquered by Tamerlane. By the 16th century, the city was abandoned due to the shifting course of the Amu Darya River. Despite these hardships, Kunya-Urgench has preserved remarkable examples of medieval Islamic architecture, now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
